Footscray is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne and home to a large concentration of the city's Vietnamese population.
Challenge
With its unique form the Welcome Arch should become representative of the story of Vietnamese settlement in Footscray, adding to its renown, and attracting visitors to the precinct; featuring a pair of giant cranes alongside other motifs that resonate with Vietnamese culture.

Solution
Manufactured from ShapeShell FreeForm, the arch maintains a feeling of lightness while benefitting from ShapeShell's structural rigidity and wonderful materiality, as it uses fluoropolymer technology in both the top layer of the product and through the underlying matrix to provide a base colour which assists in reducing the visibility of scratches.
As the centrepiece of an important civic project, the Little Saigon Welcome Arch in Leeds St., Footscray is a unique, fluid artwork that projects a sense of movement regardless of where it is viewed from. Lightweight, stiff structures built to the highest level of accuracy allows maximum off-site manufacturing. Elements from ShapeShell come to site in sections up to 12m in length. Light weight means easy and safe handling.
