John Pawson awarded CBE in Queen's New Year's Honours

Architects Amanda Levete and John Pawson and design guru Terence Conran are among the latest judges for Dezeen Awards, which is now open for entries.

British architectural designer John Pawson has been recognised for services to design and architecture with a CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list 2019.

Pawson, 69, has become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's biannual honours programme, which "recognises the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom".

Known for his minimalistic aesthetic, the designer – and Dezeen Awards judge – has created numerous paired-back buildings across the world.

His most high profile project is the renovation of the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington to create the new home of the Design Museum. Pawson designed the museum's oak-lined interior spaces, while OMA was the architect for building's structure.

Pawson established his architecture studio in 1981. However, as he never completed his architectural training, he is not officially recognised as an architect in the UK.

As well as the Design Museum, his architectural projects include a Welsh country retreat as part of Alain de Botton's Living Architecture series, a clifftop holiday home on Japan's Okinawa island, and a minimal church in Augsburg, Germany.

Pawson has also designed several homeware products including a range of minimal furniture for Spanish brand Viccarbe and an oil lamp for Swedish lighting company Wästberg.

Pawson's minimal style is a reflection of his own tastes, he explained to Dezeen columnist Will Wiles in 2016 for an article in Port Magazine.

"I don't design what I do because I want to try and live the way it's telling me to," he said. "It's just how I want things. It's a reflection of who I am and what I am," he said.

Earlier this year the designer released a book of colourful photographs, telling Dezeen that he had discovered his love of colour through Instagram.

The Queen's New Year's Honours are awarded each year in June, in addition to the Birthday Honours in June. In the 2017 New Year's Honours David Adjaye received a Knighthood, while Terence Conran, Amanda Levete and Asif Khan were all recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2017.

Japanese house by Kouichi Kimura includes white-tiled courtyard for yoga

A chimney-like tower covered in white tiles rises in the courtyard of this house in Shiga, Japan , which architect Kouichi Kimura has designed for the owner to host yoga classes. Located away from a busy main road, the two-storey residence combines a large block with a smaller one that appears to be slotted on top. There are no windows on the street-facing walls to offer plenty of privacy from passerbys. The only opening is the front door of the house, which provides a view straight through to the courtyard. Ryo Kan hotel blends Mexican materials and Japanese traditions

Guests at this hotel in Mexico City , designed by local architect Regina Galvanduque, can bathe in rooftop jacuzzis, drink tea on tatami mats or find zen in its courtyard garden. Galvanduque, who runs GLVDK Studio , designed the Ryo Kan hotel for slender plot on Rio Panuco in the city's Cuauhtémoc neighbourhood. The surrounding area has become known as Little Tokyo, making it particularly apt for the hotel, which is intended as a fusion of "Japanese and Mexican identity and values". The hotel is named after "ryokan" – a traditional Japanese inn – and follows the country's hospitality approach as Omotenashi. As a result, many features of Galvanduque's design take cues from Japanese culture, liked the striated white facade of the building based on origami paper folds.
